Meet our Human of Stratcomm Africa, Delphina in the interview below:
What led you to pursue communication studies, and how has your educational journey shaped your career path?
From a young age, I’ve always been drawn to the idea of engaging with people and expressing myself—I even imagined reading the news someday! However, I wasn’t initially certain about the exact course to pursue. A friend convinced me to apply for a Diploma in Communication Studies at the Ghana Institute of Journalism in 2017, and that decision set me on a transformative journey.
I explored broadcasting, journalism, marketing, public relations (PR), and advertising during my two-year diploma program. PR and advertising captured my heart, sparking a passion for strategic communication and storytelling. As I considered my degree top-up, I was thrilled to discover a semester dedicated to events management—an area I’ve always loved. Organizing events and bringing people together has always been second nature to me, and finding a path that combined my love for communication and event management was a dream come true. Today, I’m proud to say I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
What was your first impression of Stratcomm Africa, and how has your perspective evolved over time?
One word: Kingmaker. When I resolved to pursue a career in communications and PR, Stratcomm Africa kept popping up—whether through lecturers singing its praises or stories of the company’s impactful projects. The founder and Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Esther A.N. Cobbah, was frequently mentioned as an industry pioneer, and learning how many renowned PR and communication professionals started their journeys here, I knew this was where I wanted my own success story to begin.
Now that I’m here, that ‘Kingmaker’ perspective has only deepened. Stratcomm Africa doesn’t just train professionals; it transforms them. The organization stretches you beyond your comfort zone, challenges you to think differently, and nurtures both your technical skills and creative spirit in order to deliver excellence to clients. It’s like being in a master class for excellence in communications I’m grateful to be on this journey.
What does a typical day look like for you? Could you walk us through your daily tasks and projects?
Each day is dynamic and filled with strategic planning, concept development, and event coordination. Whether I’m brainstorming creative ideas, liaising with vendors, or ensuring seamless execution of activations, no two days are ever the same. The Ghana Garden and Flower Movement keeps me particularly busy with year-round activities, from community engagement initiatives to planning our signature annual show.
What I love most about my role is how it combines creative thinking with practical execution. Whether I’m conducting site visits for upcoming events, or creating detailed project timelines, each task requires both attention to detail and innovative problem-solving. And of course, there’s always room for impromptu meetings and quick brainstorming sessions because in events and communications, adaptability is key.
The best part? Every day brings new opportunities to make an impact, whether it’s through successful event execution, meaningful stakeholder engagement, or contributing to Stratcomm Africa’s vision of excellence in strategic communications. I thrive on this energy—the excitement of making visions come to life and delivering exceptional experiences.
What has been the most rewarding project or event you’ve worked on at Stratcomm Africa?
The annual Ghana Garden and Flower Show by Stratcomm Africa holds a special place in my heart. For the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of leading this transformative project under the exceptional guidance of our Marketing Communications Manager, Sharon K. Anim. Each year brings new challenges and opportunities to innovate, the positive impact this initiative brings to environmental conservation and sustainability and witnessing the growth of the movement and the excitement it generates every year is fulfilling.
Another highlight was coordinating the 2023 European Union Day reception – a high-profile event graced by the First Lady, ministers, diplomats, and ambassadors etc. The elegance and success of the event were a testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire Stratcomm Africa team.
What are some challenges you’ve faced in your role, and how did you overcome them?
Event planning always comes with its share of challenges—from no funds to finance events, to last-minute changes to logistical hurdles, and so on, I think I have had my fair share.
One of the biggest challenges I initially faced was managing multiple high-stakes projects simultaneously, especially during peak seasons when we have several major events overlapping. The Ghana Garden and Flower Show, for instance, requires year-round attention while other client projects continue to flow in. I overcame this through developing robust organizational systems and learning to prioritize effectively. Stratcomm Africa’s collaborative culture has been invaluable – I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask for support when needed, and that teamwork makes the dream work!
Another significant challenge was adapting to the dynamic nature of client expectations, especially when last-minute changes threaten to disrupt carefully laid plans. This is where Stratcomm Africa’s emphasis on excellence really shaped my approach. I’ve learned to build flexibility into every plan and to maintain strong relationships with stakeholders and partners who can help us pivot quickly when needed.
The events industry can be particularly demanding on your time and energy. Balancing long hours during event seasons while maintaining the high standards Stratcomm Africa is known for was initially challenging. However, this taught me the importance of self-care and efficient time management. I’ve learned to work smarter, not just harder, and to build in recovery time after major events.
What goals do you have for your career, and how do you see yourself contributing to Stratcomm Africa’s mission in the years to come?
BIG things ahead! My ambitions are as big as my passion for this field! I envision having the name Delphina Quarshie synonymous with Ghana’s most impactful and thought-leadership events. My exposure on the job and current role has influenced the goal to establish myself as a leading voice in sustainable event management across Africa. I want to pioneer innovative approaches that merge environmental consciousness with world-class event experiences, showing that we can create unforgettable moments while being responsible stewards of our environment. I’m particularly excited about scaling up initiatives like Women S.H.A.R.E. to reach and empower more women across Africa. The Ghana Garden and Flower Show has enormous potential for growth, and I’m committed to taking it to new heights.
Beyond personal achievements, I’m passionate about mentoring the next generation of communications professionals and contributing to Stratcomm Africa’s continued industry leadership. This organization has given me so much; I want to pay it forward
